 Missoula Children's

Rough Crossing

by Tom Stoppard

Directed by Steve Daniels

Scott and friends Playwrights Turai, Gal, and composer Adam have embarked on their trans-Atlantic trip and are about to surprise Natasha and Ivor with the newest song from their nearly-finished musical comedy, The Cruise of the Dodo. Unfortunately they catch the pair at the wrong time, with Ivor declaring his love for Natasha while Adam, her fiancee, listens on in horror. Sending Gal to take Adam back to his cabin to comfort him, Turai hatches a plan to convince Adam that what they actually overheard was Ivor's pathetic attempt at play writing. They are assisted by the sometimes dimwitted, sometimes brilliant but always unconventional steward Dvornichek. Despite many near revelations of Turai's plan, Adam and Natasha are reunited and the playwrights find inspiration for a new comedy, courtesy of a script by the ship's captain. Having scripts thrust upon them by amateurs is only one of the running gags of the play. Others include Dvornichek's inability to gain his sea legs until the ship is thrust into a turbulent storm and when only he is able to stay upright, Natasha and Ivor's inability to keep their scripts, both for the stage and their life straight; Adam's peculiar speech impediment, in which case he has trouble starting and often must continue a monologue indefinitely for fear of not starting aging; and a very long delayed Cognac for Turai.

Tiger at the Gates

by Jean Giraudoux

Directed by Richard Parker

A Couple"Tiger at the Gates takes place the day before the beginning of the Trojan War inside the city of Troy's gates. This play follows the struggle of the disillusioned Trojan military commander, Hector (supported by the women of Troy), to avoid war with the Greeks. Hector's wife Andromache is pregnant, contributing to his desire for peace. Along with his worldly-wise mother Hecuba, Hector leads the anti-war argument and tries to persuade his brother Paris to return Paris's beautiful but empty-headed captive Helen to Greece. Giraudoux presents Helen as not only an object of desire, but the epitome of destiny itself. She claims that she can see the future by seeing what is colored in her mind, and she sees war. For Hector, Helen means only war and destruction. But for the other Trojan men, led by the poet Demokos, she epitomizes an opportunity for glory: they are eager to have others fight a war in her name. The peace agreement Hector negotiates with the visiting Greek commander, Ulysses, is no match for Demokos's deliberate lies, and at the end of the play, the seer Cassandra's cynical prediction that war cannot be avoided has been proven right (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiger_at_the_Gates)."

Alice in Wonderland

Auditions

Alice in Wonderland Graphic

Music by David W. Simmons; Lyrics by Lewis Carroll, William Shakespeare, and David W. Simmons

The Missoula Children's Theatre presents ALICE IN WONDERLAND, an original adaptation based on Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. The story begins with Alice and her older sister Margaret reading together. Margaret becomes frustrated, as Alice is curious about absolutely everything. Suddenly, a White Rabbit appears from nowhere. After a quick and nonsensical conversation, Alice follows the rabbit to a strange and wonderful place. In the course of her adventures, Alice meets a band of Flowers, the King and Queen of Hearts, the Knave and the rest of the suit of Cards, a giant Caterpillar, a Fish, a Frog, the Duchess, the Cook, the Cheshire Cat, the Gryphon, the Mock Turtle, a group of singing Lobsters, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, the March Hare, the Mad Hatter, the Dormouse, and Humpty Dumpty. Through it all, Alice grows “curiouser and curiouser” as to where she is and even who she is. In the end, the answers she seeks are unimportant. Wonderland is all nonsense, anyway. As the White Rabbit explains, “Nonsense is fun!”

This production is part of The Missoula Children's Theatre's unique international touring project and is presented locally by The Theatre Company of The Dalles. Their productions are complete with costumes, scenery, props, and makeup.
