2010 Season

Lend Me a Tenor | Playboy of the Western World
Steel Magnolias | Robinson Crusoe (MCT)

Line

Lend Me a Tenor

By Ken Ludwig
Directed by Dennis Morgan

Group
Set in 1934, the farce revolves around renowned tenor Tito Merelli, known to his fans as "Il Stupendo," who is scheduled to sing the lead in Otello, produced as a gala fundraiser for the Cleveland Opera Company. Unfortunately, even before the star leaves his hotel room, everything begins to unravel. Chaos ensues when Merelli's wife, who has mistaken an autograph-seeker hidden in his closet for a secret lover, leaves him a "Dear John" letter. The distraught Merelli accidentally is given a double dose of tranquilizers to calm him and passes out. Saunders, the company's General Manager, is determined the show must go on (for his own financial sake), so he asks his assistant Max to impersonate the opera star. Max puts on the black face makeup required for the role of Otello, and his disguise succeeds admirably--until Merelli, also in black face, wakes up and heads for the stage. What follows is a chain-reaction of mistaken identity, plot twists, double entendres, innuendoes, and constant entrances and exits through many doors ("Wikipedia", 2010, para. 1).

The Playboy of the Western World

By John Millington Synge
Directed by Richard Parker

Man on horseThis play is set in Michael James Flaherty's public house in County Mayo (on the west coast of Ireland) during the early 1900s. The story is about Christy Mahon, a young man running away from his farm, claiming he killed his father. The locals are more interested in vicariously enjoying his story than in condemning the immorality of his murderous deed. He captures the romantic attention of the bar-maid Pegeen Mike, the daughter of Flaherty ("Wikipedia", 2010, para. 1).

Steel Magnolias

By Robert Harling
Directed by Scott Simmons

BrideThe action is set in Truvy's beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are "anybody" come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not sure whether or not she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town's rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, ("I'm not crazy, I've just been in a bad mood for forty years"); an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, who has a gaging sweet tooth; and the local social leader, M'Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby, is about to marry a "good ole boy." Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play moves toward tragedy when, in the second act, the spunky Shelby (who is diabetic) risks pregnancy and forfeits her life. The sudden realization of their mortality affects the others, but also draws on the underlying strength-and love-which give the play, and its characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny, and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad.

The Missoula Children's Theatre

Robinson Crusoe
Conceived and Written by Jim Caron

Music by Greg Boris
Lyrics by Jim Caron

Additional Concept Development and Dialogue by Annie Caron

Chameleons"Purposely varying from the plot of Daniel Defoe's novel, MCT's ROBINSON CRUSOE teaches the lesson that reading invites more than observation. Unlike TV and movies, which provide every detail, a book allows the reader the luxury and the joy of imagination. We arrive on Robinson's island years after he and his sole companion, a goat named Wilson, are shipwrecked. We find that the island has turned into a tourist destination centered around a lovable singing leopard, a tribe of natives known for their colorful coifs, Friday's Seaside Resort and, of course, the legend of Robinson Crusoe. In Flashback, his story comes to life beginning with the shipwreck which marooned he and Wilson on the island. The entire population of the island, including a herd of goats, an all-animal band, Friday and his family and the inevitable hula-dancing chameleons, discover that our differences need not stand in the way of our friendships. All of the characters live happily and harmoniously ever after ("Missoula Children's Theatre: Robinson Crusoe", 2010, para.3).

This production is part of The Missoula Children's Theatre's unique international touring project and is presented locally by The Theatre Company of The Dalles. Their productions are complete with costumes, scenery, props, and makeup.
